A short sample of Soler’s work – Used with Permission

Soler was born into a well-known Spanish artistic family, and started his musical studies at the age of 6, when he began his piano studies. At the age of 11, he began to study guitar and received highest honors in the prestigious Conservatorio Superior de Música of Barcelona, Spain. After that he continued his postgraduate work with Andrés Segovia and also received guitar orientations from Narciso Yepes, one of the most important Latin American guitarists.  Some important composers have written guitar works and concerts for him.

The Washington Post provided the following review:

“Soler showed himself to be unusually sensitive to color and the rhapsodic rise and fall of the phrases” adding: “he played dazzling solos with his left hand on the fingerboard, unleashed a battery of right-hand percussive effects on the body of the guitar, and engaged in some creative pitch-bending on blues-tinged melodies”.

Francesc de Paula Soler’s virtuosity as a performer has prompted critics to dub him “the Poet of the Guitar,” and to hail him as one of the most notable names in the guitar world.  Don’t miss this unique opportunity to hear a performance by an unusually versatile and talented international guitarist!

SLU Students Awarded Best Music Blog by Riverfront Times

Toe Taps and Spastic Claps, a music blog co-authored by Alison Arida and Sanita Saengvilar of KSLU and the Billiken Club has been named the Best Music Blog by the Riverfront Times.  The Riverfront Times has annual awards for the Best of St. Louis.

Read the article here and check out their blog Toe Taps and Spastic Claps.
Congratulations to you both from SLU Connection!

Alison, a History major, and Sanita, a Physical Therapy major, are both juniors and have  been doing the blog since mid February of 2008.  They both work at KSLU,  as a Music Director and as Training Director respectfully. They also help manage and book shows at the Billiken Club.

I don’t really know what the award entails, said Saengvilar. “Maybe a plaque, but mostly bragging rights to be called the #1 Music blog in St. Louis according to the Riverfront Times. We really had no idea we were up for the award or even that such an award existed.  We also don’t really know who was our competition, but it really is an honor to win it regardless.

The Billiken Club won an award as Best Rock Club of 2007 also by the Riverfront Times.
