Share your wisdom-Help a new student today!

Christmas is all about sharing and helping others. So with that in mind we want to help out all of the new students who will be joining the SLU Community next semester.

Transferring to a new school mid semester is always hard so we’re going to try to make the adjustment a little easier for them by asking you to give them one piece of advice that you think every student should know before coming here.

This could be something that you’veĀ  invented or discovered since you’ve been here or just something that you wish someone had told you before you came. No piece of advice is too big or too small.

Help a freshman out today. Just leave your advice in the comments section below!

In the spirit of things and being a transfer myself, I’ll start.

My advice for any new freshmen or transfers (other than reading SLU Connection every day) would be to join any club that even remotely resembles something that you’re interested in. It’s a great way to meet people who share your interests. Don’t worry about not being good enough, everyone has to start somewhere. When you find something you like, give it your best. Nothing upsets people more than undedicated club members. If you don’t like it, don’t be afraid to quit and find something else. Just be upfront about it. Your fellow members will appreciate the honesty!

  • Relationships with people are the most important thing you will leave college with — so put them first. Roommates, floor-mates, fellow club members, that kid in your Chem class who asks the annoying questions, the guy who skate boards across campus, the girl who tripped down the stairs in front of APB that one time, the maintenance worker who always comes to work when you’re getting back from studying or partying, professors, members of the StL Community… seriously. All of them. Not strangers. Potential friends. SLU draws in a unique breed of people. Get to know them. ;-)

  • Actually go to class.

Sounds like the most obvious thing in the world, but most classe don’t require that you show up all the time, and it is really easy to skip. But going to class will make a world of difference with your grades. Believe me, just go to class.

Like Sam basically said, friends ARE college. Don’t get so wrapped up in your studies or work that you don’t make bonds. Every person you meet is a potential new best friend.
Also, Sam was totally the girl that tripped down the stairs in front of ABP one time.

  • With a million attempted hours and only a measly 80 earned, I took a two year break from SLU back in ’05, because I just hadn’t found my focus yet. I got waaaaaay off track because relationships, health issues, and life itself got in the way; only because I let them though. Now, I’m graduating in May, probably the oldest senior ever, but a senior nonetheless. :)
The infamous line all your older friends and family say, “If I knew then what I know now….” Well, it’s true. My advice to any undergads: put school first. Be selfish about it! It’s your future at stake, not your friends whose callin to get you to go out the night before an exam. Don’t let anything set you off course. If an opportunity lies before you, and you hesitate for the sake of someone else, you’re doing the wrong thing. If you think you don’t have what it takes, you do. If you bomb an exam, and you did your best, then shake it off and do better next time. Point is, don’t give up, and remember what a privelage it is to have an education.
The day I walk off stage with my BA in hand is going to be one of the proudest moments of my life; a long journey finally coming to an end. Its been quite a ride over the past few years, but one I’ll never forget. Many mistakes were made, but I learned from them, and I’m very proud of how far I’ve come as a student at this university. Sad that it took me til my last year at SLU to realize what really mattered, but better late than never, right?
