Grim Reaper makes a visit to SLU

3782523530_3b54584933

The Grim Reaper will be on Campus today in participation with OkSoberfest and awareness of the number of people that are affected by drunk driving.

The Grim Reaper program is being sponsored by the Student Conduct Board in an effort to raise awareness of the number of people affected by drunk driving. According to a statistic from Mother’s Against Drunk Driving, 3 out of 10 people will be involved in an alcohol related car crash in their lifetime.

The Grim Reaper will hand out stickers to random people on SLU’s campus to represent the many people involved in alcohol related accidents. Through this program the hope is that Saint Louis University’s community will realize that anyone can be affected by someone drinking and driving and will maybe make a difference before they get into a car to drive after they have been drinking.

If anyone does not want to be approached by the Grim Reaper, please hold up your hand and you will not be approached. If assistance is needed as a result of this program, Student Health and Counseling is available by calling 977-2323.

Each semester a faculty member will be selected from student nominations to speak for the Last Lecture series.

There are not any pre-determined boundaries for the program – the faculty member will be speaking from the premise, “If you knew this was your last lecture you would ever give, what would you share with students?”  Dr. Michael Shaner, Professor of Management from John Cook School of Business, was selected to speak for the Last Lecture Series.

Dr. Shaner will speak at 7:00pm on Tuesday, November 10, 2009 in BSC 170.

Dr. Shaner received his M.B.A. from Michigan State University and his Ph.D. in Management from the University of South Carolina. He teaches graduate, undergraduate, and executive Masters level courses; and he has been awarded every teaching honor, both school and university, that the University bestows. His teaching methodology includes a strong emphasis on experiential learning, practical application, and student participation in all aspects of his courses. He has also developed and uses a computer simulation of the business environment.

In addition to his extensive teaching experience, Dr. Shaner has developed and delivers programs in the areas of strategic management, employee motivation, situational leadership, teambuilding, change management, and a program called “Adventures in Attitudes”. He has provided management development and consulting services to both large and small organizations, national and international, in both the public and private sectors. Mike also provides coaching services to executives seeking to maximize their business potential, run organizations effectively, and manage people wisely.

This program sponsored by the Division of Student Development and the Office of the Provost.

St. Baldrick’s is a non-profit organization that coordinates fundraisers in which volunteers shave their head in solidarity with cancer patients while raising money for children’s cancer research.

Volunteers spread the word to their friends and family who donate to their cause.

Here at SLU, a team has been started with a few students who are already working their way toward a goal. They’re almost halfway toward the $4,500 they set out to raise.

To learn more about St. Baldrick’s, check out their website here. You can also check out the SLU team page here.
