String Orchestra Concert to be Held in Xavier Hall Wednesday

The Department of Fine and Performing Arts is hosting a concert by the SLU String Orchestra:

The newly formed SLU String Orchestra will present its first concert on Wednesday, December 3, at 7:30 pm in the University Theatre, Xavier Hall.

The force behind the formation of this string orchestra is the director, Marc Thayer, educational outreach director of the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra and adjunct faculty in the Department of Fine and Performing Arts – Music at Saint Louis University.

The orchestra is comprised of faculty and staff of the University from the Frost and Medical campus as well as students. For their first program orchestra is playing works of Mendelssohn, Vivaldi, Mozart, Walton, and Warlock.

The concert is free and open to the public. A reception will follow the concert. For more information call Julia at 977-2410.

AED Offers Smoothies for a Stronger Immune System

Finals are almost upon us. That means more work, less sleep, and a weaker immune system, which is something you definitely don’t need during finals week.

Alpha Epsilon Delta, SLU’s pre-health club, and the Department of Camus Recreation are coming together to help boost your immune system.

Stop by the juice bar at the Simon Rec in the next few days to sample a new smoothie recipe concocted to help you glide through finals without any inconvenient confrontation with the swine. They’ll be manning the juice bar on December 1-3 from 5 pm-6 pm.

NSSLHA at SLU Offers Free Hearing Screenings

The National Student Speech Language Hearing Association at Saint Louis University is offering free hearing screenings at the SLU Speech-Language Hearing Clinic, located in the basement of McGannon Hall. Anyone over three years old is encouraged to get a free hearing screening.

Hearing screenings will be offered on two days; You can set up an appointment on December 4 from 9-2 or on December 5 from 9-2

MOCRA Observes Day of Remembrance in Exhibit

MOCRA observes the Day With(out) Art:

On December 1, 2009, Saint Louis University’s Museum of Contemporary Religious Art (MOCRA) will observe the twentieth anniversary of the Day With(out) Art, a national day of action and mourning in response to the AIDS crisis, by exhibiting “The Promise,” an important work by the late New York artist Adrian Kellard.

Kellard (1959-1991) was a rising artist in the 1980s. His large-scale carved wood block panels evoked both medieval shrines and the woodblock prints of 20th-century German Expressionists, but their bright colors and folksy quality made them accessible to a wide range of audiences.

For the Day With(out) Art MOCRA will feature one of his last works, titled “The Promise,” which references the legend of St. Christopher, who carried the infant Jesus across a turbulent river. Kellard depicts himself in the role of St. Christopher. “The Promise” asserts the possibility of hope and compassion in the midst of suffering. Kellard’s own life was cut short by AIDS at the age of 32.

MOCRA will be open from 11 am to 4 pm on December 1, and “The Promise” will remain on display during regular museum hours through December 13, 2009.

Holiday Rooms in Bloom December 3 at the Samuel Cupples House

The Samuel Cupples House is hosting its regular Rooms in Bloom with a holiday theme this December:

The event begins with the lighting of the Cupples House Christmas tree on December 3 at 5:30 p.m. On-air radio personality, Laurie Mac of K-HITS 96 will light the tree and serve as the official hostess of the preview reception of Holiday Rooms in Bloom that will immediately follow the tree lighting. Carolers from the SLU music program will perform songs of the season.

Join the festivities as members of the St. Louis Florists Network will “deck the halls,” of St. Louis’ only Richardsonian mansion with floral works of art that feature the crimsons, evergreens and winter whites of the holiday season. The elegantly furnished rooms of the historic mansion will be resplendent with the creations of the area’s premiere florists.

No admission charge. In the spirit of giving, all visitors are encouraged to donate either a new or gently used clothing item to benefit the St. Francis Xavier (College Church) parish help center. Make the historic Samuel Cupples House your home for the holidays.
