The Great Issues Committee is Now Accepting New Member Applications for the 2010-2011 Academic Year

The Great Issues Committee, the committee of student who bring speakers to SLU, is accepting new member applications for the 2010-2011 school year. You might know them from events such as Bill Nye, Elie Wiesel, Mike Huckabee, and most recently Here’s some more information from the committee:

The Great Issues Committee strives to stimulate insightful, provocative debate on current issues that will inform and educate as a service to the Saint Louis University community. All speakers are meant to engage the community, both within the university and citywide, in a healthy and informative debate and discussion over numerous current issues and events garnering national attention.

This year, was the committee’s most well-attended year in its history, with Elie Wiesel as the biggest event it has ever sponsored.

The committee would like to continue this streak next year, but they need creative and committed students to take the places of the graduating seniors.

Applications are due March 22 and can be accessed through the google doc here or on GIC’s website at gic.slu.edu. Any questions should be directed to gic@slu.edu.

Housing and Residence Life Reminds Students to Turn in Their Application and Deposit

Housing is important. People in college need a place to sleep and study and keep their things. At least I think they do. Most people around me seem to anyway.

Housing and Residence Life would like to remind students that February 26 is the last day to turn in the housing application and $250 deposit for returning students. You must turn in the application and deposit by this day to ensure that you receive a housing application in March.

If you have any questions or concerns, contact slu.rha@gmail.com.

The Billiken Blizzard is Wednesday!

This Wednesday, the Billikens will take on Xavier in the Billiken Blizzard at 7 pm in the Chaifetz.

Students are encouraged to go to the game sporting all white. At the game, students will receive the always collectible Billiken Blizzard t-shirts. Come early for a pre-game student reception at the Chaifetz Pavillion sponsored by Outback Steakhouse. This game is televised on Fox Sports Midwest, so be sure to bring some signs and make some noise!

Seniors get their tickets for half the price, only $5 with all the benefits, available in the Student Involvement Center on the top floor of the BSC. I guess graduating in this economy is good for one thing.

Immediately following the game, Billikens After Dark, the Student Activities Board, and Athletics are presenting “Twilight: New Moon,” which I think has something to do with halloween or something. Free popcorn and soda for the attendees of “New Moon.”

Justice for Immigrants Aims to Raise Awareness on Comprehensive Immigration Reform

Justice for Immigrants is a Catholic Campaign sponsored by the US Bishops that began in 2004 and is focused on immigrant reform.

The primary objectives are to educate the public, including Catholic public officials, about Church teaching on migration and immigrants; to create political will for positive immigrant reform; to enact legislative and administrative reforms based on the principles articulated by the bishops; and to organize Catholic networks to assist qualified immigrants obtain the benefits of the reforms.

A vote on immigration reform is expected this spring. The Justice for Immigrants Campaign launched a postcard action, which is designed to put pressure on legislatures to support comprehensive immigration reform. Campus Ministry will be at mass on Sunday and in the Busch Student Center from 11 am- 1 pm during the week to collect signatures. The postcards will also be available in Campus Ministry for students who want to collect signatures on their own.
