Time flies, and before we know it, Welcome Week 2011 will be here.
On August 26, SLU will host its annual Convocation, which will feature speeches given by distinguished faculty as well as a speech given by a full-time undergraduate student. That student could be you. The student speaker will be chosen by a selection committee based his or her experience with SLU and their proposed message to incoming students and their families.
If you want to be considered, you must submit a draft of a 2-3 minute speech in writing (around 500-600 words). Reflect on the following questions in your speech:
• What have you gained from your time at SLU?
• How will your experience at SLU impact your future?
• What advice would you give students for their first-year at SLU?
• What makes SLU, a Catholic, Jesuit university, distinctive from other schools?
• What does being a Billiken mean?
• What does it mean to be a member of the SLU community?
• What are the main points that you want to leave with new students and their families?
Speeches will be judged on content, organization, well-roundedness of student experience, appropriateness for new students and their families, and the ability to stay within the time limit.
Applicants must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0, be in good standing with the Office of Student Conduct, and be on campus the week before classes start in the fall (Monday, August 22). Finalists will be asked to present their speeches in mid-April for final selection.
To apply, submit your speech – along with your name, email address, phone number, major, year in school, GPA, and list of involvements on campus – to the Student Involvement Center (BSC room 319) or email it to Susan Krieg at
skrieg2@slu.edu.
Applications are due Friday, April 8 by 5PM.
