Kick It! with Active Minds

Active Minds at Saint Louis University will be hosting Kick It! with Active Minds, a benefit kickball tournament, in an effort to bring the SLU community together to raise mental health awareness, fight stigma, and prevent college student suicide.

The tournament will be held on April 30 from 11AM to 2PM at the Women’s Softball field and the Laclede/Compton field. All funds raised will go to support Active Minds, Inc.’s national movement for college student mental health and the local chapter at SLU.

Laura Hicks, Publicity Chair for SLU Active Minds, had this to say:

Kick It! with Active Minds is shaping up to be one of our most exciting events yet. It will be a great way to get out and get active while learning about Active Minds’ goals to reduce the stigma of mental illness and make students aware of what mental health resources are available for them in the community. We are looking forward to having a fun tournament and the chance to meet new people that may not be very familiar with our mission at Saint Louis University.

The tournament is open to the entire SLU community – students, faculty, staff, family, and friends are all encouraged to form teams and participate! The cost is $10 per player. Full teams (9-10 players), small groups (2-8 players), and individual free agents can register at activeminds.org/kickit. After clicking on the registration link, there is a specific link for registration for Kick It! at SLU. Information about student mental health and where to go to seek help will be available at the tournament.

Student Involvement Center is Looking for Student Convocation Speaker

Time flies, and before we know it, Welcome Week 2011 will be here.
On August 26, SLU will host its annual Convocation, which will feature speeches given by distinguished faculty as well as a speech given by a full-time undergraduate student. That student could be you. The student speaker will be chosen by a selection committee based his or her experience with SLU and their proposed message to incoming students and their families.
If you want to be considered, you must submit a draft of a 2-3 minute speech in writing (around 500-600 words). Reflect on the following questions in your speech:
• What have you gained from your time at SLU?
• How will your experience at SLU impact your future?
• What advice would you give students for their first-year at SLU?
• What makes SLU, a Catholic, Jesuit university, distinctive from other schools?
• What does being a Billiken mean?
• What does it mean to be a member of the SLU community?
• What are the main points that you want to leave with new students and their families?
Speeches will be judged on content, organization, well-roundedness of student experience, appropriateness for new students and their families, and the ability to stay within the time limit.
Applicants must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0, be in good standing with the Office of Student Conduct, and be on campus the week before classes start in the fall (Monday, August 22). Finalists will be asked to present their speeches in mid-April for final selection.
To apply, submit your speech – along with your name, email address, phone number, major, year in school, GPA, and list of involvements on campus – to the Student Involvement Center (BSC room 319) or email it to Susan Krieg at skrieg2@slu.edu.
You can find more info on the Student Involvement Center’s website.
Applications are due Friday, April 8 by 5PM.
