“The New Vice Presidency”

Curious about the President’s helper?

In conjunction with its current exhibition, Persuasive Politics 2012: Presidential Campaign Memorabilia, the Saint Louis University Museum of Art is pleased to host Dr. Joel Goldstein, Saint Louis University law professor and one of the nation’s foremost experts on the vice presidency. Dr. Goldstein will present “The New Vice Presidency: A Political Institution Transformed.”  this Sunday, Oct. 8th from 2-3pm at SLUMA.
Dr. Goldstein states, “Historically the vice presidency has been our nation’s most challenged office.  It has been described in disparaging terms–a spare tire, a burial ground, a pitcher of warm spit, and worse.  Yet in modern times the office has emerged as a robust institution of government.  It is no longer simply the source of the first successor but of an officer who contributes to the work and success of the presidential administration.  Our next vice president will be a central part of our government as have vice presidents from both political parties beginning with Walter F. Mondale. This presentation will outline the recent evolution of the office, the reasons for it, and what this transformation suggests about the possibilities of the American system of government.”
