Sanita and I are on a constant quest to find the next big band or trend in music. Although the internet is one of the best ways to go about discovering these undiscovered gems, nothing beats seeing it live!
Here’s a quick list of must-see stops in St. Louis that are sure to provide all you music lovers out there with top-notch acts:
We St. Louisans are quite lucky–there are many great establishments in the area that provide innovative, refreshing and cheap performances! For starters, St. Louis University is home to the Billiken Club, our campus’ student-run music venue. The club’s roster has run the gamut from national acts like The Mountain Goats, Dan Deacon and Caribou to our fair city’s own So Many Dynamos, Gentleman Auction House and Theodore. This Wednesday, check out Kansas City’s Republic Tigers and Friday come see Marnie Stern!
Claim to fame: All shows are free, all ages, and open to the public.
Just about a five minute drive from SLU, The Bluebird hosts great shows on a pretty regular basis, most of them under $10. Located at 2706 Olive Street, The Bluebird was voted The Riverfront Times’ “Best Rock Venue” this year. Coming up on the 26th is the Gold Tooth CD Release Party.
Claim to fame: The Bluebird has a pretty impressive bar for those that are of age and an overall cool atmosphere for music fans of all types.
In the heart of St. Louis’ Cherokee neighborhood sits Apop Records, an independent record store specializing in recordings, books and films that are often overlooked by the general public. Head down to the basement and you’ll find yourself in Camp Concentration–not as intense as it sounds–Apop’s music venue that hosts everything excellently obsure, both nationally and locally. The store has built quite a following in the area and thrives on the idea that they provide available information that one does not readily come by.
Claim to fame: The store’s cat, Barrel, is one of the raddest cats I’ve ever crossed paths with. Awesome cats and awesome music are all that this girl needs.
–There are many other notable venues located in St. Louis (Lemp Neighborhood Arts Center, Off Broadway, The Gargoyle at WashU, the above are just a few of our personal favs. Do get out there and check out live music! St. Louis has a lot to offer musically and we wanna keep it that way!
