Best places to find live music in St. Louis

Sanita and I are on a constant quest to find the next big band or trend in music.  Although the internet is one of the best ways to go about discovering these undiscovered gems, nothing beats seeing it live!

Here’s a quick list of must-see stops in St. Louis that are sure to provide all you music lovers out there with top-notch acts:

Dan Deacon at The Billiken Club, Spring 08

Dan Deacon at The Billiken Club, Spring '08

We St. Louisans are quite lucky–there are many great establishments in the area that provide innovative, refreshing and cheap performances!  For starters, St. Louis University is home to the Billiken Club, our campus’ student-run music venue.  The club’s roster has run the gamut from national acts like The Mountain Goats, Dan Deacon and Caribou to our fair city’s own So Many Dynamos, Gentleman Auction House and Theodore.  This Wednesday, check out Kansas City’s Republic Tigers and Friday come see Marnie Stern!

Claim to fame:  All shows are free, all ages, and open to the public.

Just about a five minute drive from SLU, The Bluebird hosts great shows on a pretty regular basis, most of them under $10.  Located at 2706 Olive Street, The Bluebird was voted The Riverfront Times’ “Best Rock Venue” this year. Coming up on the 26th is the Gold Tooth CD Release Party.

Claim to fame:  The Bluebird has a pretty impressive bar for those that are of age and an overall cool atmosphere for music fans of all types.

In the heart of St. Louis’ Cherokee neighborhood sits Apop Records, an independent record store specializing in recordings, books and films that are often overlooked by the general public.  Head down to the basement and you’ll find yourself in Camp Concentration–not as intense as it sounds–Apop’s music venue that hosts everything excellently obsure, both nationally and locally.  The store has built quite a following in the area and thrives on the idea that they provide available information that one does not readily come by.

Claim to fame:  The store’s cat, Barrel, is one of the raddest cats I’ve ever crossed paths with.  Awesome cats and awesome music are all that this girl needs.

–There are many other notable venues located in St. Louis (Lemp Neighborhood Arts Center, Off Broadway, The Gargoyle at WashU, the above are just a few of our personal favs.  Do get out there and check out live music!  St. Louis has a lot to offer musically and we wanna keep it that way!

Our Lives As Billiken Club Managers…

As you may already know, when we aren’t busy being students we also volunteer much of our time to The Billiken Club (Yes, It is where Salsarita’s resides).

If you didn’t already know, but your beloved campus throws on free shows to the you and the rest of the public almost on a weekly basis.  The acts are relatively well known and meant to appeal to you!, a new music seeking outgoing SLU student.

There is a lot of time that goes into throwing a show, but as long as we know that we are making a difference by offering a place that students can go to find free awesome music, we would not have it any other way. But the club would be pretty much nonexistent without the help of our supervisor, Chris Graubau.

So we beg of you to come to a show and chat with us a bit.  We always take recommendations and you can email them to info.billikenclub@gmail.com.  Check out our current semester lineup at thebillikenclub.wordpress.com.

Tomorrow, November 19th is going to feature local Kansas City band, The Republic Tigers who’s been featured on tv soundtracks such as Grey’s Anatomy and Gossip Girl. The show starts at 9PM and it’s FREE, all ages and open to the public. We will be rocking the quad tomorrow with tunes by the band and please feel free to stop by or listen as you walk to class.  Also playing is Malpais and St. Louis local, Grace Basement.  Check out more info on the Facebook event, HERE.

Toe Taps and Spastic Claps Guestblogging Begins…NOW!

Hello everyone!

Sanita and Alison, here to give you our points of view and lives at SLU.

First and foremost here are our FAQs:

What was the inspiration of the name of your music blog, Toe Taps and Spastic Claps?

Our friend, Irum Javed initially said the name Toe Taps and Hand Claps for a dance theme so we took it, ran, changed Hand Claps to Spastic Claps, and never looked back.

What is a Spastic Clap?

It is simply any song that features clapping or quick clapping.  The clapping is often so intense that the person’s body convulses. You can check out one of our favorite hand clapping songs below…and link to post – Super Spastic Claps Playlist.

How did you guys decide to start a music blog?

We both had our own personal blogs and were both frustrated by it so we decided that we both loved music,  figured St. Louis really needed a current music blog, had somewhat an ability to write and so became the birth of our blog.

What is the mission of you guys’ blog?

It is to feed music to the people of the world as if mounted through the skies of success as though on the wings of six dragons…
