New Member Applications Available for the Great Issues Committee

The Great Issues Committee is now accepting applications for next year’s committee.

If you’ve ever wanted to meet the people making news in the United States and around the world, to organize some of the biggest events on SLU’s campus, or to spend several times the average annual American salary in a matter of months, this committee is for you.

They’re looking for thoughtful and motivated applicants for next year’s committee. To apply, visit this page and follow the instructions on the application.

The Great Issues Committee Presents Michelle Rhee


Did you know Michelle Rhee is coming to SLU on March 23?

Featured in both TIME and Newsweek, Rhee is a leader in national education reform. A former member of Teach for America, she was charged with turning around the nation’s lowest-performing school system, District of Columbia Schools. Since stepping down from that position, she has focused on StudentsFirst, a political advocacy organization that works with education reform.

The event is free, open to the public, and starts at 7 PM in the Wool Ballrooms. Ms. Rhee will devoting a considerable amount of time to answering students’ questions, so come with a jovial demeanor and an inquiring mind.

Applications will be available at the event for anyone interested in joining the Great Issues Committee next year.

 

Free Showing of “Waiting For Superman”

On Monday, March 21, The Students Activity Board and The Great Issue Committee will host on free showing of the documentary “Waiting For Superman” in BSC room 172/173 (part of the Wool Ballroom). The show starts at 8PM. There will be free popcorn too! (SLU Connection loves free popcorn.)

The award-winning film was made in 2010 by director Davis Guggenheim. It analyzes the failures of American public education by following several students through the school system.

Anti-Racist Writer Tim Wise Speaks on Colorblindness and Its Consequences Tonight in the Wool Ballrooms

The Great Issues Committee will host Tim Wise tonight in the Wool Ballrooms. Lyle Wilson sent us this information:

Tim Wise is among the more prominent anti-racist writers and educators in the United States. Recently named one of “25 Visionaries Who are Changing Your World” by Utne Reader, Wise has spoken in 49 states, on over 600 college campuses and to community groups across the nation.

Wise’s most recent book is, Colorblind: The Rise of Post-Racial Politics and the Retreat from Racial Equity. He will use themes from this book to speak to students at Saint Louis University on issues of privilege and equality.

Wise is the author of 5 books that deal with issues of race within politics and society. He received the 2001 British Diversity Award for best feature essay on race issues, and his writings have appeared in dozens of popular, professional and scholarly journals.

The address will take place at 7 PM tonight in the Wool Ballrooms. Get there early to get a seat!

 

The Great Issues Committee Now Accepting Freshman Applications

The Great Issues Committee, the student organization that brings speakers to campus, is looking for two thoughtful and responsible freshmen to serve as their freshmen representatives.

Head over the gic.slu.edu to fill out the google doc and return it to Janelle Densberger in BSC 319 or email it to gic.slu.edu.

The Great Issues Committee will be bringing Eboo Patel October 5.
