The SLU chapter of Alpha Sigma Nu, the Jesuit Honor Society, is busy this year planning a few upcoming events. Fr. Paul Stark has more:

SLU Alpha Sigma Nu will participate in Homecoming festivities with an information table, and in the golf cart parade on September 25th, one of SLU’s best homecoming traditions. Before or after the parade, stop by the information booth in the quad to learn more about one of the most prestigious honor societies on campus, and how it can be a part of your future!

The University has begun accepting nominations for the 19th annual Leadership and Service Awards Ceremony. The event, to be held on Thursday, April 15, 2010, at 6:30 pm, recognizes outstanding student leaders, advisors, and organizations for their contributions to Saint Louis University and the surrounding community.

We encourage you to nominate your own student organization, an advisor that has made a significant impact in your life, and any other students you know that you feel are well deserving of recognition for the outstanding work they have been doing this year.

All nominations are now being accepted online at http://www.slu.edu/x28620.xml. Once online, you’ll be able to nominate fellow students for Individual Awards or nominate a student organization for Organizational Awards. We also encourage you to nominate your staff or faculty advisor for the Outstanding Advisor Award. You can also find descriptions of all the awards on this website as well.

The Great Issues Committee, the committee of student who bring speakers to SLU, is accepting new member applications for the 2010-2011 school year. You might know them from events such as Bill Nye, Elie Wiesel, Mike Huckabee, and most recently Here’s some more information from the committee:

The Great Issues Committee strives to stimulate insightful, provocative debate on current issues that will inform and educate as a service to the Saint Louis University community. All speakers are meant to engage the community, both within the university and citywide, in a healthy and informative debate and discussion over numerous current issues and events garnering national attention.

This year, was the committee’s most well-attended year in its history, with Elie Wiesel as the biggest event it has ever sponsored.

The committee would like to continue this streak next year, but they need creative and committed students to take the places of the graduating seniors.

Applications are due March 22 and can be accessed through the google doc here or on GIC’s website at gic.slu.edu. Any questions should be directed to gic@slu.edu.

On campus here at SLU, we’re surrounded by people who have innovative ideas about making St. Louis better. If you’re one of those people, there’s good news: you may be able to win up to $2,000 to get your idea off the ground.

The Saint Louis University Social Change and Innovation Conference, which takes place January 30 from 10 am -5 pm, seeks to bridge the gap between ideas and implementing them. Participants will gain a broader understanding of social issues, seek to find solutions to social problems, and participate in social change by collaborating with others for a common purpose.

After the conference, students will have the opportunity to apply for a bright idea grant, and have the chance to earn up to $2,000 to help implement their plan and make it a reality.

The First-Year Experience programs are gearing up for their next selection process. Now is your chance to apply to be a SLU 101 Leader, an Oriflamme Leader, a University 101 Peer Instructor, a Commuter Assistant, or multiple positions.

Resident adviser recruitment process for the 2010-2011 academic year has begun. The Department of Housing and Residence Life is looking for strong student leaders who want to make a difference in residential communities.

We know that every student has great qualities that they would bring to the RA position and we encourage all that are interested to apply. Application information is currently online. Applications are due by December 9. For more information, go to the website or talk to your RA.

The Billiken Buddy program is a student volunteer organization overseen by the Office of Undergraduate Admission.

The main purpose of the Billiken Buddy program is to aid the Visit Office in their recruitment of prospective students. Billiken Buddies host prospective students in their residence halls, allow them to shadow class, and give group tours of the campus.

Members will be given the option to pursue leadership opportunities and become eligible to apply for a paid University Ambassador position after one semester of participation in the Billiken Buddy program.

There will be informational meetings Tuesday, November 17 at both 4 and 7 PM. It is only necessary to be in attendance at one meeting. Applications will be available for Spring positions. Further questions should be directed to Vince Penna, at vpenna@slu.edu.

Service Leadership is starting its annual toy drive:

Donate new or slightly used toys or money from Monday, November 2 to Wednesday, December 2 to help benefit St. Louis youth this Christmas. Donations can be dropped off in Cook 124 or Cook 130.

We will also be holding a raffle November 16-20 11 am-1 pm in the BSC and the John Cook School of Business. Buy a ticket for a chance to win awesome prizes and raise money for the Toy Drive!

Secretary-General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon visited Saint Louis University last month to discuss global food security. While here he addressed the world food crisis and the plight of those he calls the “bottom billion”

“Some 1 billion of the world’s people — I call them the ‘bottom billion’ — live on less than $1 a day,” he said. “Two billion live on less than $2 a day. That means that one third of world?s people live on less than $2 a day. Many, if not most of them, are children. Hunger and under-nutrition are their overwhelming daily reality.”

Mary A. Bruemmer Award

The Student Government Association established the Mary A. Bruemmer Award to recognize the administrator, faculty, or staff member that has mad the greatest impact on student life at Saint Louis University in the current year. Has it been your student group’s adviser that has made the greatest impact? Was it a professor that has gone above and beyond their role in the classroom? The decision is yours! Joseph F. Hodes Student of the Year Award

Every year, Student Government honors a student who has demonstrated an outstanding commitment to student life and the excellence of the Saint Louis University experience, in the spirit of our mission and identity as a Jesuit institution. This student must have gone above and beyond his or her role as student to have a lasting impact on students, faculty, and staff at Saint Louis University. George D. Wendel Civic Leadership Award

The Student Government Association established the George D. Wendel Civic Leadership Award in honor of the late professor in the Department of Public Policy Studies to recognize an individual whose actions have proven to further the advancement of the City of St. Louis and Saint Louis University, embodying the ideals of the Jesuit call to be “men and women for other.” Please follow this link to nominate an individual for the George D. Wendel Civic Leadership Award.

The Office of Student Conduct and the Mediation and Advocacy program have several leadership opportunities available for next year for students with good communicative and interpersonal skills, decision-making abilities and academic record.

Involvement in these positions will assist students in better developing their leadership skills and gaining a deeper understanding of what it means to be men and women for others, and will provide the student with the opportunity to effect positive changes in the lives of their peers.

Positions available are: Student Conduct Board member, Student Conduct Board Chair-Elect, Student Advocate. Applications are available in the Office of Student Conduct, Rm 313, and online at the Office’s website.

The national leadership honor society is currently accepting applications. If you hold junior class standing or above, are a leader at SLU, and have a cumulative GPA of 3.48 or higher, pick up an application in the Office of Student Development (BSC suite # 319).

ODK chooses to recognize outstanding students in the following areas: athletics, scholarship, creative and performing arts, community service, social and religious activities, student government, and journalism, speech and the mass media.

ODK holds monthly meetings and hosts the Fall Leadership Conference. Applications are due by 3 pm on Friday, March 27, 2009 in the Office of Student Development (Attn: Janelle Densberger). Applicants must submit a one-time membership fee of $95 in the form of a check made to Saint Louis University with their application. We will promptly refund the check if you are not chosen for membership.

The Division of Student Development is accepting nominations for the annual Leadership and Service Awards Ceremony.

The event, to be held on Thursday, April 16, 2009 at 7 p.m., in the BSC Multipurpose Room, recognizes outstanding student leaders, advisors, and organizations for their contributions to Saint Louis University and the surrounding community.

Various leadership categories include Greek Life, Residence Hall Leadership, SLU Media, Spirit, Academic & Honor Societies, Graduate Student Groups, Entertainment, Commuter Life, Club Sports, Multicultural, and Social Action. To nominate outstanding leaders and advisors, visit the Student Life website (http://studentlife.slu.edu) or contact the Department of Student Life. Faculty, staff, and students are encouraged to submit nominations.

Nominations are due by 12:00 pm by Friday, March 6, 2009 in the Student Involvement Center, Busch Student Center 319. The awards selection will be based solely on the nomination submission letters. Be sure to obtain details so that your letter may represent all of the candidate’s achievements fully.
