Celebrate the Year of the Dragon

The first day of the first new moon of the year, today, marks the beginning of Lunar New Year. According to Chinese Astrology, 2012 is the year of the dragon, the only mythical animal in the zodiac. People born in the year of the dragon are said to be charismatic, energetic and natural leaders. Some famous “dragons” include Joan of Arc, Vladimir Putin, and John Lennon.

The Chinese New Year is a time to welcome a long life, wealth and prosperity and to eliminate any negativity from the past. This fourteen day celebration is very symbolic and holds many myths and traditions for the Chinese culture. It is the tradition that every family thoroughly cleans the house to sweep away any ill-fortune in hopes to make way for good luck, peace, and happiness. Food during the celebration includes items such as pigs, ducks, chicken and sweet delicacies.

International Student Services is hosting a celebration and viewing of the CCTV Chinese New Year Gala. Join the festivities and learn more about the traditions.
