View the spiritual, political, and emotional journey through the brush strokes and distinctive, yet harmonious perspectives of two noted painters: Father James Hasse, S.J. and Judge Nathan B. Young.

Spirit and History: Paintings by Father James Hasse and Judge Nathan B. Young will open with a 6 p.m. reception on Friday, January 27.

Father James Hasse spent over 40 years of his ministry in African-American parishes throughout the Midwest. He was deeply influenced by the community he served, and his work reflects Biblical themes, as related to the strife of the African-American woman.

Judge Nathan B. Young practiced law for nearly 40 years in St. Louis, co-founded the St. Louis American newspaper; and became the first African-American municipal judge in the city. Young created paintings that chronicled the changes and development of the American experience for for change and development.

The Saint Louis University Museum of Art is pleased to present an exhibition featuring the woodcuts of nationally renowned artist, Tom Huck. Tom Huck: Brutal Truths will open with a reception this evening Friday, February 18 beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Brutal Truths will include more than 45 of Huck’s large-scale, intricately complex woodcuts including work from several of his major series including Two Weeks in August: 14 Rural Absurdities; The Bloody Bucket; BLAB!, and The Transformation of Brandy Baghead.

In many of his prints, Huck finds his inspiration in incredibly bizarre, but true occurrences that happened in his boyhood home of Potosi, MO, approximately 80 miles southwest of St. Louis. While the stories are true, Huck uses his printmaking prowess to exaggerate the details and embellish the facts in his woodcuts that allow him to embrace his fervor for storytelling. The Two Weeks in August: 14 Rural Absurdities series took Huck three years to complete.

Huck’s relationship with contemporary popular culture is complex. He is at once documenter, critic, and participant. At the age of 13, he became fascinated with the dark imagery incorporated in the woodcuts of Albrecht Dürer (1471 — 1528), and immersed himself in the artist’s work. His study of Dürer’s work has been relentless and Huck cites him as one of his printmaking heroes, as well as José Guadalupe Posada (1851 — 1913).

Tom Huck and his work have also been linked to the world of alternative comics. He is quite comfortable operating in the realm between observer and producer of popular culture. As a youth, the work of R. Crumb, the legendary underground comics artist was a source of inspiration for Huck.

The intricacy of Huck’s carving is remarkable, and the range of textures, surfaces and tones he achieves in these blocks are feats of control and mastery.

About the Artist:

Tom Huck was born in 1971 and lived in Potosi, MO. He currently resides in St. Louis and produces his woodcuts at his Evil Print studio, also located in St. Louis.

Huck is represented by the Philip Slein Gallery, St. Louis, MO.

Spring is settling in on St. Louis, and what better way to celebrate than with some fine wine and some stringed instruments? Mary Marshall at the Saint Louis University Museum of Art explains:

The sound of STRINGS is in the air at the Saint Louis University Museum of Art. The music of Haydn and Dvorak will be performed by two Saint Louis University string quartets on Sunday, April 11, beginning at noon and continuing until 2 p.m.

Wine and light refreshments will be served. The event is free-of-charge.

While at the museum, be sure to visit Crossing the Divide: Jesuits on the American Frontier. The exhibition contains dictionaries of Native-American languages; as well as maps and detailed journals as chronicled by the Jesuits who arrived in St. Louis in 1823. Of significant importance are the sketches and water colors of Father Nicholas Point, and on display for the first time is the Moses Linton album, a chronicle of the work and travels of Father Pierre De Smet.

The Samuel Cupples House is hosting its regular Rooms in Bloom with a holiday theme this December:

The event begins with the lighting of the Cupples House Christmas tree on December 3 at 5:30 p.m. On-air radio personality, Laurie Mac of K-HITS 96 will light the tree and serve as the official hostess of the preview reception of Holiday Rooms in Bloom that will immediately follow the tree lighting. Carolers from the SLU music program will perform songs of the season.

Join the festivities as members of the St. Louis Florists Network will “deck the halls,” of St. Louis’ only Richardsonian mansion with floral works of art that feature the crimsons, evergreens and winter whites of the holiday season. The elegantly furnished rooms of the historic mansion will be resplendent with the creations of the area’s premiere florists.

No admission charge. In the spirit of giving, all visitors are encouraged to donate either a new or gently used clothing item to benefit the St. Francis Xavier (College Church) parish help center. Make the historic Samuel Cupples House your home for the holidays.

The Saint Louis University Museum of Art is hosting the U.S. inaugural exhibition of The 12th Hungarian Cartoon Festival: A Dialogue of Cultures. The exhibition opens on Friday, October 23 at 6 pm, and continues until December 20. Here’s what SLUMA had to say about it:

In 2008 the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in conjunction with the Hungarian Culture Foundation, initiated a cartoon competition to commemorate the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue. The first-time international competition invited cartoonists worldwide to submit their works related to the topic, “Dialogue of Cultures.”

The result was an exhibition that contained 77 cartoons originating from 25 countries. The caricatures astonish, amuse, and allow for an unlimited amount of personal interpretation. They offer an illustration of the value and diversity in history, traditions and cultures. Some of the works, while seemingly depicting the most every day occurrences, reach almost philosophical heights.

This event is sponsored by The Hungarian-Missouri Educational Partnership and the Thomas Jefferson School, located in Sunset Hills, MO.
