South African Wine Tasting in the Central West End Benefits the Society of African American Studies

The Society of African American Studies invites students who are 21 and over to enjoy some jazz over a wine tasting (or a wine tasting over some jazz, if you prefer) at Vino Wine Gallery in the Central West End on Saturday, November 6, from 6 PM to 9 PM. John Roper describes the event:

Fall into Jazz is a South African Wine Tasting fundraiser featuring five different wines for tasting. Fall into Jazz will offer relaxing jazz performances and samples of the fine tastes of City of Saint Louis restaurants.

Funds raised will be used to help support the Society of African American Studies annual Pre-Kwanzaa Celebration and the Sanfoka African American Graduate recognition ceremony.

The cost is $15. Directions to the Vino Wine Gallery can be found here.

This Sunday, Saint Louis University Urban Planning Association will take SLU students on a field trip of sorts to my personal favorite St. Louis neighborhood, South Grand.

“See St. Louis: South Grand” is part of a larger series of Metro tours for SLU students to get fun, hands-on experience learning how to use the Metro system to explore St. Louis. On Sunday, October 24, they will meet at the MetroBus stop in front of DuBourg Hall at 12:30 PM to take the #70 bus as a group to Tower Grove Park on South Grand. From there, they will explore the neighborhood, grabbing lunch at one of South Grand’s many international restaurants and cafes. At 2:30, they will return to campus on the #70 bus. Bus fare will be $4 round trip, also be sure to bring money for lunch.

Come out and meet other SLU students excited about exploring St. Louis and trying new things!

The City of Saint Louis and Boeing Present Open Streets This Sunday

Mark J. Zinn of Mondays in Midtown send SLU Connection a wonderfully informative story on Open Streets, the closing of selected streets in St. Louis for bike and pedestrian traffic:

The City of St. Louis will be sponsoring an Open Streets event this Sunday, September 19th from 8am-1pm.  The six mile route of closed streets includes areas in the Grand Center, Central West End, Downtown and Tower Grove Park.

In addition to streets being closed for pedestrian and bike traffic, three Activity Hubs will be located along the Open Streets route. Grand and Washington, just north of the main campus, is one of those hubs and will feature yoga classes, spinning classes, bike service stations, wellness information, fun activities for children and all the water you can drink.

The event is free and put on by the City of St. Louis, Boeing, Blue Cross Blue Shield and Healthlink. For more information about Open Streets, or to see a detailed map,  visit www.stlopenstreets.org.
