Allies for Inclusion: The Ability Exhibit

The Ability Exhibit is an interactive multimedia exhibit to promote the inclusion of people with disabilities through respect for others, comfort during interactions and awareness of disability issues.

Using a multi-media approach to demonstrate respect, comfort and awareness, the exhibit offers suggestions for becoming disability allies and educators. The Ability Exhibit was created by SLU graduate students in the disability in higher education and Society course under the direction of their instructor, Karen Myers, Ph.D. The exhibit travels nationally to educate on inclusion of people with disabilities.

When it comes to interacting with individuals with disabilities, people ask, “What should I do?” “How should I respond?” “Is it okay to say that?” “How can I become an ally?” Allies for Inclusion: The Ability Exhibit will attempt to answer some of these questions.

The Last Lecture Series – Dr. Martha Shockey-Eckles

Each semester a faculty member will be selected from student nominations to speak for the Last Lecture series.  The Last Lecture series provides an informal format for selected faculty to share reflections from their life’s journey and to speak to students as if it was their last lecture ever.  There are not any pre-determined boundaries for the program – the faculty member will be speaking from the premise, “If you knew this was your last lecture you would ever give, what would you share with students?”

Nominations from students were reviewed by a committee of faculty, staff, and students to determine the spring 2011 speaker. Dr. Martha Shockey-Eckles, Assistant Professor of Sociology and Criminal Justice from the College of Arts and Sciences, was selected to speak for the Last Lecture Series. Dr. Shockey-Eckles will speak at 7:00pm on Monday, April 18, 2011 in BSC 170.

Dr. Shockey-Eckles received her B.A. from St. Ambrose University, her M.A. from the University of Iowa, and her Ph.D. from the University of Iowa. Dr. Shockey-Eckles teaches a variety of courses, with her primary emphasis focusing on classes included in the Criminal Justice curriculum. As the policing expert in the department she assumed full responsibility for teaching all Law Enforcement courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels and developed and taught the undergraduate Capstone course.
We are pleased that Dr. Shockey-Eckles will be the speaker for the spring 2011 Last Lecture. She has titled her Last Lecture presentation, “The Many Faces of Humanity.”

Come out to hear what Dr. Shockey-Eckles has to share with the campus community as if it were her last lecture ever.

This program is sponsored by the Division of Student Development and the offices of the Vice President, Frost and the Vice President, Health Sciences.

Bright Idea Grant Recipients Give Presentations This Wednesday

Every year, SLU gives “Bright Idea Grants” to help make innovative student ideas a reality. On Wednesday, March 23, the recipients of these grants will be giving presentations in BSC Room 253B at 12PM-1PM.  The event is sponsored by the Center for Service and Community Engagement and the Office of Student Development. Light snacks and drinks will be provided.

The two projects that won the grants this year are:

The Video in Prison Project (VIP) - VIP works in conjunction with the mission of the Saint Louis University College-in-Prison Program to fill a critical gap in the intellectual environment of the prison by providing a means for incarcerated men and staff to enhance their intellectual and personal growth by providing access to university events, occurring beyond the classroom.

and

Forte: Love the Way You Play - The Forte project works to empower middle school students by giving them a chance to fully develop their understanding of and ability to play music. In doing so, Forte will provide the students with the opportunity to express themselves creatively and develop self confidence.
