From the Technology Coordinator, Conrad Ramos:

Techs troubleshoot and resolve any technical issues that a staff or faculty member may have. These issues include troubleshooting printers, replacing hardware components on workstations, editing the registry and everything in between. Student workers are also trained in areas which they may not be knowledgeable in order to perform their duties.

The hours are flexible around your academic schedule and technicians start at $9/hr.

It is well-known folklore that Samuel Cupples often enjoyed a glass of wine on his patio as he tried to think of ways to make his house look more awesome. Now you can follow in his footsteps by raising a glass to the class of 2010. Mary Marshall with the Samuel Cupples House has more:

The patio of the Historic Samuel Cupples House will be the place to be to raise a glass in toast to the Class of 2010.

Join us on Thursday, May 13, for a wine tasting and the mellow sounds of the jazz trio, The Silk Pajamas. The “toast” begins at 4 p.m. and continues until 7:30. The event is open to the entire University community.

Wine will be available for purchase by the bottle and by the glass. There is no admission fee. Must be 21-years-of-age to consume or purchase alcohol.

The Student Media Production Team (SMPT) is looking to hire an additional member to work on video production projects through the summer. Candidates must be a current SLU student who enjoys all aspects of video production. Over the course of the summer you’ll be involved in filming and editing various video projects for the university community.

Job Summary: Under the general direction of the Student Media Coordinator, the Student Media Staff members will provide media production services and to the division of Student Development.

Tomorrow, April 30, from 10:30 AM to 12 PM, the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting will be presenting “Fragile States: Afghanistan to Haiti,” featuring journalists Jason Motlagh, Andre Lambertson, and Lisa Armstrong. Allison Reilly has more:

Andre Lambertson is an award winning photojournalist whose work ranges from the study of juvenile violence in America to sexual slavery in Sierra Leone. His photos have appeared in Time, US News and World Report, Life, The New York Times Magazine, The London Sunday Times, Fortune, The Baltimore Sun, where he was a staff photographer, The New York Times, The Philadelphia Inquirer, and The Village Voice.

Lisa Armstrong is an award-winning journalist with credits in, including The Washington Post, National Geographic, Parade, Ms., Essence, Redbook, USA Weekend and O, The Oprah Magazine. She is an adjunct professor at the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism and has also taught at NYU. Feel free to read Lisa’s full bio here.

Jason Motlagh is one of one of the Pulitzer Center’s star reporters, a roving freelance journalist with reporting projects from over thirty countries in the Mideast, South Asia, West Africa and Central Asia. His projects with the Pulitzer Center have ranged from documenting stories of Afghanistan civilian loss in Afghanistan: Civilians Under Siege to covering stories of religious, ethnic and class tensions and Maoist insurgents in India.

This discussion will center on fragile states, international policy, and rebuilding efforts. The event takes place in BSC 251.

Looking for a way to get involved with campus life and build professional experience? The Department of Academic Support is looking for new tutors and supplemental instruction (SI) leaders for the 2010-2011 academic year.

Tutors are still needed for both the Frost and Medical Center campuses and for a variety of subjects, including Accounting, Chemistry, Economics, Math (all levels), Philosophy, Foreign Languages (especially German and French) and more! SI leaders are needed for Chemistry, History, and Psychology!

To be eligible, you need to have earned at least a 3.0 in the subject area you wish to tutor and at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA. Position offers flexible, on-campus hours at the rate of $10 per hour.

The Saint Louis University Student Bar Association and Optimist International are hosting a Law Day 2010 from 6 to 8 PM in the school of Law this Thursday, April 29. Chris Wintrode explains:

We are inviting local middle and high school students from St. Louis to the law school to come learn about and appreciate the emerging challenges and enduring traditions of law in the 21st century during Law Day 2010. They will be able to watch a mock trial and hear from real attorneys, judges, and law students. We will provide dinner and prizes as well.

Active Minds, a student group that seeks to eliminate the stigma of mental illness, is hosting two speakers on Thursday. Amanda Textor explains:

“In Our Own Voices” speaker series from the National Alliance on Mental Illness featuring Elizabeth Rajchart and Theresa San Luis will be coming to speak about their personal experiences with mental illness and how they dealt with the diagnoses in college.

Speakers will be playing a video and stopping it at segments to discuss their own personal journeys with mental illness through dark days, acceptance, treatment, coping strategies, and finally success, hopes, and dreams.

The event will be held in the Saint Louis Room in the BSC at 7 PM.

Sponsored by Active Minds and cosponsored by the Great Issues Committee, Psi Chi, Billikens After Dark, School of Social Work, Doerr Center for Social Justice.

This Saturday, Students for Life at Saint Louis University will be hosting their 4th annual Run for Their Lives 5K Run/Walk on April 24 at 9 AM on SLU’s campus. Here’s Patrick Grillot with SFL describing how the funds raise through the 5k are used:

The proceeds of the Run for Their Lives go towards the Pregnant and Parenting Student Assistance. The PPSA was established by SFL in October 2008. In the 18 months since its creation, the endowment has grown to over $45,000. Earlier this year, seven students received assistance totaling $3,025.
The PPSA’s philosophy and goal is that no student should ever have to choose between having a child and having an education. This belief is founded on three values: education, community, and support.
Previous to the establishment of the assistance, the proceeds benefited the following local crisis pregnancy centers: Our Lady’s Inn, Birthright, and the Pregnancy Resource Center. SFL still supports these groups through volunteer work and publications.

SFL at SLU won the Community Service Award at the 2010 Students for Life of America conference for their work in the St. Louis community, including the Run for Their Lives. At the 2009 conference, SFL at SLU received the Group of the Year Award from SFLA.

For two weekends, the University Theatre will be showing their production of Machinal right here on campus in Xavier Hall. Here’s John Lamb in the Department of Fine and Performing Arts with more:

Based loosely on a 1920’s criminal trial, MACHINAL explores an era in which a woman’s role is confined to wife, mother, housekeeper, and sexual partner. When love is considered unnecessary, marriage may lead to murder. This powerful drama is considered a classic of American Expressionism.

The play will run on Fridays and Saturdays, April 23, 24, 30, and May 1 at 8 PM; and May 2 at 2 PM. The cost is $7 for students and $9 for faculty and staff.
